Bromley and the Somme

18th November 2016 By Les

I live in Bromley , the largest of the Greater London Boroughs with a population of just over 300,000 ,made up of all age groups of male and female ,just a normal population . It is difficult to imagine that a battle ended today ,100 years ago in the middle of the First World War where over 1,000,000 men died or were wounded . the Battle of the Somme started on the 1st July 1916 and ended 18th November 1916 ,very little was gained in land occupied but so much was lost . The men mainly young from the British Empire ,French and Germany , left so many communities short of a whole generation ,and in the end for nothing . It must be remembered these men were so brave ,going into battle to defend their homeland ,knowing that the risk of being killed or wounded  was so high . Why did our leaders on both sides value political gain above human life ?
